What Is the Friends of the Macon County Public Library? The Friends of the Macon County Public Library, Inc., celebrated its 36th anniversary in 2007. It is a nonprofit organization whose members share the belief that residents should support their public library system in many different ways in addition to their regular taxes. Anyone is eligible to become a member. The current membership is about 440. Macon County's Friends organization is part of the state and national Friends of the Library network. Through the work of many dedicated, hard-working volunteers, the Friends of the Library has been instrumental in helping make the Macon County Public Library one of the finest in the State for a county our size. Founded in 1971, the FoL has long been a driving force among community fund-raising efforts in support of the Macon County Public Library, most recently raising in excess of $1 million in order to furnish and equip the new library located at 819 Siler Road in Franklin. Macon County's Friends of the Public Library raises money for the library by operating the only full-time, Friends' volunteer-run used Bookstore in North Carolina, located at 121 Highlands Road in the convenient East Franklin Shopping Center (just off East Main Street.) The Friends' Bookstore carries a wide range of used books, magazines, records, puzzles, games, and other items which are donated by public-spirited Macon County residents and visitors. In 2007, the Bookstore's sales produced more than $60,000 for the Public Library. The money is used for extra purchases of books, audiovisual materials, equipment, and to help defray the costs of special programs for children and adults. In addition to this substantial support for the ongoing programs the library provides, the Friends recently made a $25,000 donation to the Library Endowment Fund, in order to ensure available support far into the future.
