CHILD AND FAMILY SERVICES

New Horizons Center for Children and Families
Contact: 704-524-4473. Receptionist will direct your call to appropriate staff person.
Quality programs and services for families with children ages 0-5. Head Start, child care, Parent-Child Center, developmental day care, adult development and training, Region A Smart Start training and NC Information Highway Distance Learning Classroom. Also provides offices for Macon County
Department of Social Services eligibility specialists, Macon County Literacy Council and Orchard View Apartments management.

Highlands Head Start

Head Start services for eligible families with children ages 3-5 who live in Highlands and surrounding communities.

Highlands Parent Child Center

Services available for eligible families from pregnancy until child reaches age three. Goals include: 1)improve overall developmental progress of the child, 2) increase parents' knowledge of their child(ren) and parenting skills, and 3)strengthen the family.

Nantahala Head Start/Parent Child Center

Burningtown Head Start

Pruett House Family Center/Infant-Toddler Day Care

Pruett House Family Center/Adult Day Care

Care for aging or handicapped adults who need assistance in a family-like setting during the day. Helps adults remain independent and self-sufficient.

After school activities for youth in sixth through eighth grade. Volunteers and staff provide supervised activities, field trips and community projects in Nantahala, Franklin and Highlands.

HOUSING SERVICES

Self-Help Housing

Homeownership opportunities for qualified families and individuals. The program provides assistance with the application process, site selection, house plans, labor and all other phases of new construction.

HUD Section 8 Rental Assistance

Financial assistance with monthly rent and utility payments for qualified families and individuals.

Housing Rehabilitation/Home Repair

Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA)

For qualified individuals who need help with basic education, job search skills and work experience. This program provides assistance with job placement for youth and adults.
