THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL
Designated a National Scenic Trail, the Appalachian Trail is a 2100 mile footpath along the crest of the Appalachian Mountains from Mt. Katabdin in Maine to Springer Mountain in Georgia, traversing fourteen states.
The Nantahala Hiking Club has responsibility for clearing and marking the Trail from the town of Wesser on the Nantahala River to Bly Gap at the Georgia State line.
•The Appalachian Trail Conservancy supervises our joint efforts with the USFS in the maintenance of these 60 miles. A rocker patch is available for those who complete the NHC section.
This section of the Trail follows the crest of the Nantahala Mountains over a series of 5,000 foot peaks affording splendid views of endless blue ranges.
Located within the boundary of the Nantahala National Forest and the Southern Nantahala Wilderness in western North Carolina, the Trail corridor is carefully protected to foster a natural habitat.
Deer, bear, grouse, wild turkey, song birds; an abundance of wild flowers from early spring until November; flowering trees; flame azalea and rhododendron; the may varieties of ferns; the clear tumbling streams; all add delight to traveling the Trail in all seasons.
TRAIL MARKING
The Appalachian Trail is marked with white paint blazes and signs. Two blazes, one above the other warn of a change in direction or intersecting trail; proceed with caution. If the top blaze is offset to one side, the Trail will turn in that direction.
Major trails intersecting the A.T. are marked with blue blazes. The Bartram Trail is marked with yellow blazes.
