Trail Register

Trail Registers are usually found at shelters and at some trail-heads and are used to pass information to the club or to other hikers who follow. During the through-hiker "season" when there are many hikers trying to go end-to-end on the AT, it is an integral part of the trail grapevine. It often records the triumphs and hardships of a hike as well as humor, greetings and reports of trail conditions. Feel free to add your bit to NHC's trail register.

Hiked 31.1 miles from Rock gap to NOC on Nov. 16-18. Started late, got to Siler Bald shelter, couldn't find it in the dark. Used Cold Spring shelter next night. This shelter leaked and needs replacing. Met Ron and Ruth Grove at Panther gap doing maintenance. Nice folks. Great hike. Looking forward to the Smokey's. Stay safe.

Hi everyone from the current president of NHC! Many of you will be starting to hike the GREAT HIKE soon. We wish you good planning and great fun in the endeavor. Be sure to stop by in Franklin, it's a very hiker-friendly town, with a number of nice motels and most of the chain restaurants and a few others of the "good" & nice variety. We have Chinese, Tai, Italian, Mexican, and country. Happy Hikin'

Moving to the Asheville area in the first quarter of 2006. As a past AT thru-hiker I am looking forward to giving back to the trail. I appreciate all the hard work and man-hours that it takes to maintain the trail. Next year you will have an extra set of hands to help as I look forward to helping out in anyway.

To Members of Nantahala Hiking Club, Thank You All for maintaining this difficult trail. My girlfriend, Rootie Tootie, & I hiked from Winding Stair Gap to Fontana Dam between July 16 - July 22 this year. We met an AT Section Club President in the hiking store in Franklin and he was of much, much help and we also met a  trail maintenance work crew as we were hiking and saw the difficulty of their task. We climbed over, around at least 4 downed trees across the trail so we do know the damage Mother Nature can do. We are the Uptown (Social Security) Hikers and appreciate all that is done to keep the trail 'do-able' for old ladies like us.  We loved the hike although almost lost it at the unnamed first S to N 'Jump up' which was really a 'jump down' for us or 'Fall-Off' may be closer to what happened. We took off our packs and slid down on our behinds through this narrow crevasse, put our packs back on only to discover the real 'Jump up' 1/2 mile later where we again took off the packs and sorta jumped down.  The hike down into Wesser at 7:30 that evening was an adventure but the 2-day rest & knee braces from Wal-Mart and OTC painkillers for Spider's knees worked for the next 4 days. We had done part of Georgia AT last year but found the NC trail much more difficult but well worth the challenge. The views from Wayah Bald, Wesser Bald Firetower, & Chenoah Bald were breathtaking.  Following big 'ol bear tracks one morning gave us something to think about besides not tripping or asking, "Have you seen a blaze lately?" Spider's husband, Grumpy, had given us each a 'Bear Totem" to carry to protect us.  They apparently worked. Grumpy does not hike but does keep us supplied with occasional crisis KFC at gaps and always at trail's end. We now have two wonderful annotated photo albums of our AT Adventures.  Showing friends pictures of our remote tented campsite 0.3 mile north of Rocky Bald next to a stream in an isolated, quiet, pristine wilderness is really a privilege and blessing. We belong and give to the AT Conservancy.  My advice to kids is to do this when you are young, not 65.  We hope to do the Smokies next summer. Advice Welcome.  Keep the AT hikin'! Section hiking south. Ivan disrupted plans to hike Davenport to Fontana so spent the week of Sept 20 hiking Fontana to Wayah Gap. Damage from the storm was small limbs down almost everywhere and periodically large trees on the trail. Mud slide near Licklog Gap is severe but was passable. Being unprepared for this section had a hard time finding the spring for Wesser shelter as was traveling south. This new shelter design is very good. I had it all to myself. (Wondered who might be sleeping underneath. A lot of room down there. It wasn't a mouse.) Had wonderful weather and the views from Wesser Bald Tower and from Wayah bald tower were some of the best so far. Looking forward to hiking the rest of NHC section next year.

We just completed the Nantahala Section of the AT. We have had our camper in Franklin the past 5 months while we did sectional hikes whenever our schedule allowed. It was a real treat. Our favorite things were Albert Mtn. and Siler Bald! We wish that the Smoky Mtn. section had access roads like the Nantahala.

Howdy. On Oct. 20th two buddies and myself will climb out of Dick's Creek Gap on our way to wallace Gap. It won't matter if it rains or snows, whether 'skeeters carry me down the trail or if I have to share my tent with bears, it will ALL be good. If anyone else will be out there at that time drop me a line, I'd be glad to hear from you. This will be a hike through a beautiful area at a beautiful time of the year and I am excited about it. See you on the trail!

Hello again! Several weeks ago I phoned two of your hike leaders from my Florida home. They were very pleasant to visit with. I signed up for two of your club's upcoming hikes....June 29th to Big Laurel Falls, and July 4th to Satulah Mountain. For some time now, I've been looking forward to visiting your area this summer. It will be great meeting your fine club members while enjoying hiking with them in your lovely North Carolina mountains! Sending my best to each of you.

Happy New Year 2003! Just yesterday, I received my NHC membership card, patch, and very first Club Newsletter! After visiting your fine website for several years, I'm so happy to finally become a club member. Seeing the 6 pages worth of member names on your club roster is great! Many years ago I first enjoyed hiking the lovely Nantahala section of the AT. Unfortunately, I have only hiked your area a couple times since then. My goal is to retire in 8 years at the "young" age of 62, and move from South Florida up to your area. Perhaps that is a bit 'different' since many folks focus on Florida in their retirement years. But, the mountains and meeting the fine people in your area are where my heart is. At that time, I am looking forward to helping the NHC with trail maintenance, leading club hikes, regularly attending club meetings, and any other jobs, big or small, that are needed. (I'm beginning working out even now to be an active member in your club!) Please continue all the good work you do!
