Trail Register

Trail Registers are usually found at shelters and at some trail-heads and are used to pass information to the club or to other hikers who follow. During the through-hiker "season" when there are many hikers trying to go end-to-end on the AT, it is an integral part of the trail grapevine. It often records the triumphs and hardships of a hike as well as humor, greetings and reports of trail conditions. Feel free to add your bit to NHC's trail register.

My family and I (and my 71 yr old mother from New Zealand) visited Wesser Bald Tower, starting from Telico Gap. What a beautiful way to spend Labor day in the mountains of NC. The relatively easy trail (for a couple of over-weight city-slickers - one with a heart condition!), and their kids (5 & 7) added some sanity into an otherwise too hurried lifestyle. Rest assured, we will be back!

Just checking the web page after being notified by the Coriell's that it had changed. Great page! Haven't been in the club area of the AT for several years. It's one of my favorites on the entire trail. Hope to get down there in the fall.

Good morning! Great hiking the first week of July. No problem having enough water. Helped some boy scouts understand that the wooden 'lid' for the water at Wesser Bald shelter is supposed to stay on top of the holding basin! Some trees down between Wesser Bald shelter and NOC. Thank you for your work to maintain the trail...we had a truly glorious week. Grizzly Dan, Panther, and Peach Blossom

Me, Slow moving Bear Through Woods and my partner Tim, RidgeRunner finsihed this section this day. Rouhest part of Trail since Springer. But we met the best people thru hiking. Makes us wish we could be with them all the way just to share their wonderful spirit.

Hello, we're returning to the Nantahala section of the trail in March (me and a couple of Eagle Scouts). As section hikers, we'll do our usual thing of yielding to thru hikers for shelter space. Can anyone report on drought conditions? When I was in Big South Fork in the Fall, hikers were warned about numerous falling trees due to disease. Is that a problem on the N.C. AT? See you on the trail. Doug.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all NHC members. You have a very informative web site. Keep up the good work. I am researching a section hike in May from Springer to Standing Indian Campground. Do any of your members provide shuttle services? I would be looking for a ride from Standing Indian Campground (where I would try to leave a vehicle) to Springer where I would be starting. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Hello! I'm interested in any of the more strenuous hikes that I could go on from my area of Georgia, or during a long 3 day weekend. Our club, Singles Outdoor Adventures, often does hikes in the Franklin or Highlands area (though they are at our outer limit for a day hike) and places such as Standing Indian and Black Rock (near Clayton). They are simply not doing enough strenuous hikes and backpacking trips. I would like to add some of these to my weekends.

Would like to be picked up by support team on road. thanks an A.T.member jay swafford 173 FoxRun Springfield,TN 37172-7332

Hello all. In very hot July of 2000 I lead a small group of Boy Scouts (troop 275) from Springer Mtn. to Woody Gap. We had planned to go further (Unicoi Gap) but the heat was dangerously intense. We plan to return in late March 2001 to pick up where we left off and make it to at least Dicks Creek in GA. if not to NC. Thanks for all the good information. I love this stuff and would thru hike if circumstances permitted. I intend to eventually hike the entire AT. See you on the trail.

Just surfing AT sites and found a link to yours. I found the photos of the shelters and wanted to grab my sleeping bag and climb right into the photo. So appealing! What would we do without the opportunity to carry a few pounds of gear and spend some time in the woods and hills? I know I'd go crazy - yet there are many who never experience it. Thank you for maintaining this section where so many can stretch their legs, expand their lung capacity, and get away from the stresses and commitments of routine city life. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Hi...I have never done any serious hiking but am very interested in hiking some parts (southern) of the AT. I'm in fairly good condition from long distance cycling, mountain biking and jogging. I would like to know if there are small groups of people that would take on a novice hiker, say for maybe a week or so to start. My goal would be to do the entire trail, but I better start slow. I could go anytime from Aug - Oct 2000. Thanks for any info...Jan

Excellent website. I frequently hear your hikes advertised on the Highlands station, and hope to try a hike sometime soon. I've done most of the trails in the Oconee County, Cashiers and N GA areas and look for something new and different. My dog, Nick, sure will be upset with me though. He loves to hike as much as I do.

You have done a great job with this web site. I hiked part of the trail with some friends 9-99. We did from Springer to Neels Gap. Spoke to Jeff Hansen at Walasi-Yi Center (very informative). Solo-hiked to Franklin where my in-laws live. Plan to do again in fall. Hope to hike with Nantahala Club sometime soon.

Wonderful Web page! I also want to compliment your section of trail I recently hiked. Back in November, Bob and I hiked from Dick's Creek Gap to Wallace Gap. Plumorchard, Muskcrat Creek, and Standing Indian Shelters were great! Also liked the addition you made to Big Spring Shelter. Wonderful views on most of the trail. We also ran into one of your trail crews on Albert Mountain and ended up lunching with them at Big Spring. Great people! We will continue our section hike in May of 98, so we are looking forward to continuing on your beautiful section of the AT. Keep up the good work on the trails.

Thank you for the site and the pictures. The unnamed flower on page two is the Atamasco Lily, a lovely spring flower and our own Easter Lily. Also Standing Indian has one of the finest stands (no pun intended) of Fringed Orchid anywhere in the Carolinas or Virginia. Another Carolina orchid, Rattlesnake Plantain, grows the length and breadth of the Nantahala.
